Destined to live happily ever after, Rory McIlroy decided to to call off his engagement with Caroline Wozniacki just days after the wedding invitations were mailed out. Opening up to the press, Wozniacki revealed the lessons learned from such a tumultuous experience.
"In my head, I had everything until that moment," she said (via the Express). "I had a great career, I was getting married, I have a perfect family. Everything was great. There was really nothing going against me. I was happy, very happy. Then all of a sudden, something happens that you don't expect. You just see your world turned around, literally from one second to the next."
"I think I didn't know how strong I was until that happened and I didn't know how much you can actually take," Wozniacki added. "It really feels like someone close to you has died. You have to go through all of that. I think that taught me so much. I think I grew up so much in that short amount of time. I also realized who is always there for me and who is just there when things are good."
Now focused on her professional career, Wozniacki is using her heartbreak to fuel her success on the court.
"I was trying to win every match because I knew that every time I had a match to play I was in my own little bubble and didn't have to think about anything else," she said. "That gave me more hunger to win. Then I got on to a roll where I was winning a lot of my matches. My confidence grew and then you win back the respect of other players."
"I just went on a roll. It was a good period for me. It's nice to be back in the top five. It's where I feel like I belong."
Wozniacki is scheduled to appear at the Miami Open presented by Itau on Mar. 23.
