As the reigning champion in NCAA football, Ohio State shouldn’t have much to complain about.

However, it’s only March and head coach Urban Meyer has one big decision already looming on the horizon -- specifically, whom to name the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback for 2015.

Meyer will be choosing between three very viable, and competitive options. Braxton Miller opened 2014 as the clear starter, but was sidelined before Labor Day with season-ending shoulder problems. Second-stringer J.T. Barrett performed excellently in his stead, leading OSU to a postseason playoff berth and a fifth place spot in the Heisman voting. However, he fractured his ankle in the Big Ten regular season finale.

Then third-stringer Cardale Jones came in, and only led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten and national championship in three short appearances.

There was one scenario in which this could’ve been a lot easier for Meyer. Jones was flirting with heading toward the NFL draft, and transfer rumors linked Braxton Miller to schools like Florida State and LSU. That would leave only Barrett left in Columbus, and thus the obvious starter.

However, neither Jones nor Miller ended up going anywhere. And it looks like Meyer is anything but certain on a top choice.

Whoever Meyer goes with, expect that young QB to have a decidedly short leash. It’s hard to be patient with inconsistency when there are two high-caliber alternatives sitting on the bench.
