Massachusetts police are piecing together a theory where they believe Aaron Hernandez may have allegedly killed one-time associate Odin Lloyd because he knew secrets about other violent crimes he had previously been involved in.
According to TMZ, Lloyd sometimes “mouthed off” to the hot-headed former New England Patriots All-Star tight end with threats of making public “secrets” he also knew about his alleged involvement in drugs.
TMZ said police do not believe Lloyd, 27, actually tried to extort money from Hernandez, but rather used the information to occasionally taunt him. The theory is that Hernandez went ballistic, fearing that such revelations would end his relationship with both is his fiancée and the Patriots’ organization.
Lloyd’s bullet-riddled body was found less than a mile from Hernandez’s sprawling estate earlier this month. Police said he had been shot at least five times in the style of an execution.
The two men were known to be acquaintances with, Lloyd, a semi-pro football player, dating the sister of the mother of Hernandez’s daughter. Since word of the crime became public, the Patriots have severed all ties with Hernandez and are seeking to void the remainder of the five-year, $40 million deal they recently inked with him.
Lloyd was buried this weekend, while Hernandez remains jailed without bail. The 23-year-old former Florida star has also been implicated in an unrelated 2012 double-homicide, which police say they are still investigating.
