Brooklyn Barclays' Center Interested In Hosting Mayweather Fight

Barclays Center officials are interested in having five-division world champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. hold one of his mega-fights at their new downtown Brooklyn facility.

ESPN reports Mayweather was on hand for last week’s Adrien Broner vs. Paul Malignaggi fight and received one of the night’s loudest ovations. During the fight, Mayweather sat with Barclays Center and Nets CEO Brett Yormack and later also met with Bruce Ratner, the man largely credited with bringing the much-buzzed about arena to the borough.

"There is certainly interest in both the ownership and the building to bring Floyd here," ESPN reported a Barclays’ Center  source said.  ESPN also reports in the past, one hurdle to bringing Mayweather, the top earner last year in sports, to town has been the tax structure in New York State. Entertainers get a chunk taken from their earnings in New York, as opposed to in, say, Las Vegas, where they are not taxed.

Mayweather is the midst of fulfilling a six-fight deal with Showtime and is next scheduled to face Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas on Sept.14.  After that, Brooklyn and Barclays reign as a looming venue option for the still perfect 44—0 champ.

Over the last two year’s Forbes Magazine has ranked “Money Mayweather” among the world’s highest earning athletes in both instances.
