The Dallas Cowboys signed Darren McFadden last week in the wake of DeMarco Murray's departure, but nobody expects the team to rely on McFadden as their feature running back during the 2015 season. The team has been mentioned in basically every Adrian Peterson rumor out there recently, but could Jerry Jones have another plan in mind entirely?

Would Dallas Trade Allow AP To Repair Public Image?

Dallas has the 27th pick in the first round, and while the team does have several needs on the defensive side of the ball, the team could elect to spend the pick on a running back to fill the void in the backfield. The team has been mentioned as a landing spot for Todd Gurley in the past, and they are reportedly set to meet with Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon also.

Gordon is widely considered to be one of the two best backs available in the draft (along with Gurley), and he could be the man that Dallas wants taking handoffs from Tony Romo next season.

NFL Forcing Jameis Winston To Skip Draft?

Gordon proved that he could carry a heavy workload while at Wisconsin, and even if he became a first-round pick, he would be a substantially cheaper alternative to Adrian Peterson, which would help Dallas spend its precious available cap space on areas of greater need.

There is also no guarantee that the team would even need to spend a first-round pick on Gordon. For the past two years, the first running back of the board has lasted until well into the second round. If Gordon is their man, Dallas could elect to trade back from 27, gain some extra draft capital, and still take him in the second round.
