Michael Sam has yet to find lasting success on an NFL roster, but the league's first openly gay football player has remained in the headlines for a different reason: he's just been cast on the twentieth season of ABC's Dancing With The Stars.

As such, Sam has been back on the interview circuit, talking to media outlets about all things football, dancing, and his personal life.

One topic that Sam has been quite open about is his relationship with boyfriend and fiancé Vic Cammisano. The two have been dating since their days at the University of Missouri. They are attached at the hip on social media, and famously shared a smooch on ESPN after Sam was taken by St. Louis in the seventh round of the 2014 draft.

Sam credits Cammisano as the individual who gave him the strength to come out, but also says that their relationship has its fair share of detractors.

"The challenge I get now is, why are you not dating a gay black guy?" Sam said, via The Huffington Post. "Why are you dating a white guy? Why would I do that? Why would I leave someone I fell in love with and have been through so many challenges with?”

Sam also claims that he is not the only gay player in the NFL.

"I’m just the only one that is out,” he said. “They want to protect their livelihood...but there will be a time [when they come out]. There’s going to be a day.”

And when that day comes no doubt Sam will be the first member of the sport to cheer them on.
