The Portland Trailblazers have rejected Cleveland’s offer of the top and No. 19 pick in this week’s NBA draft for All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, according to ESPN.
With Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel still recovering from midseason knee season surgery, the Cavs have been largely non-committal as to what they plan to do with the draft’s top selection. In the case of Aldridge, management seems driven by the idea of pairing the high-scoring forward with fast emerging point guard Kyrie Irving.
But the Blazers don’t seem inclined to move their top scorer and rebounder. If no deal for Aldridge can be made, Cavs brass has also discussed the idea of tabbing Ben McLemore or Victor Olidapo with the top pick. Georgetown forward Otto Porter and Maryland center Alex Len are also said to be under consideration.
Aldridge has averaged 18 points and eight rebounds over his seven seasons in Portland, including averages of 21 points and nine rebounds last season. The Blazers acquired him in a 2007 draft night trade with the Chicago Bulls for forwards Tyrus Thomas and Victor Khryapa.
Aldridge is also the 2010-11 recipient of the Maurice Lucas Award, annually given to the Blazer player who best represents the spirit of the Lucas through their contributions on the court and in the community.
