With free agency about to start (some would argue it already has started since players and teams have been talking for days), teams will now set about furiously negotiating with players, signing them to contracts, and making all manner of moves to improve their squads as much as possible.

While the teams are trying to improve for the 2015 season, free agency moves also often reveal the bigger picture plan that teams have in place. For the Washington Redskins, their signings in the next couple of weeks could say a lot about what they plan to do with franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The Baylor product has had an up-and-down career so far. He won Rookie of the Year, suffered some serious leg injuries, and still appears to have trouble reading defenses and exhibits some mechanical flaws. Head coach Jay Gruden has already announced that RG3 will be the team's starter in 2015, but the team also has 2016 and beyond to consider.

Will RG3 Disappoint Again In 2015?

Washington will have to decide by May 3 if they want to pick up the fifth-year option on RG3's rookie contract, which is expected to cost the team north of $15 million. In other words, the team will not get to see any more game action from Griffin before making the call.

That is where free agency may reveal some clues. Washington is not expected to shop at the top of the market (and as a rebuilding team, that is probably the right move), and they do already have some offensive talent around RG3 with running back Alfred Morris and receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon. The team does need some help on defense, however.

If Washington mostly elects to pursue defensive free agents, then they may be preparing to see what Griffin gives them in 2015 with the anticipation of moving on if he does not exhibit significant improvement. But if they were to pursue some offensive line upgrades and possibly another receiver, then it may be a sign that they have a renewed commitment to helping Griffin realize his full potential and that they plan to pick up his option for 2016.
