Obviously everyone remembers the bombing that took place at the Boston marathon nearly two years ago. It was a horrible attack that marred one of the most popular marathons in America, but it was also an opportunity for the city and country to show its resilience and resolve.

Today, the trial for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the man accused of being behind the bombings got underway, and there was unexpected drama right from the outset, according to CNN. During the opening statements, Tsarnaev's own attorney came right out and said that he was responsible for the attack.

"It was him," defense attorney Judy Clarke told jurors.

Tsarnaev placed one of the bombs and was later involved in a shootout with the, and the defense is not bothering to deny any of those allegations.

The first day of a trial will generally offer some insight into the strategies that the prosecution and defense will use to prove their cases, and apparently the defense's case will hinge strongly on Tsarnaev's motive.

They will argue that he was enlisted and influenced by his brother Tamerian to commit the crimes that took place on April 15, 2013.

By contrast, the prosecution is attempting to paint Tsarnaev as a remorseless radical that went about with his normal activities after the bombing took place.

"The defendant's goal that day was to maim and kill as many victims as possible," prosecutor William Weinreb said during his opening statement. "He believed that he was a soldier in a holy war against Americans. He believed he had taken a step toward reaching paradise. That was his motive for committing these crimes."

The challenge with many criminal cases, particularly ones that are painted with a patriotic brush, is to get jurors to approach the case with an open mind, which is exactly what Clarke spent much of day one imploring them to do.

There is no guarantee on how long the trial will last, but the shocking admission of guilt right from the outset most likely means that it should not drag on too long, as the fight over motive will be the main issue leading up to Tsarnaev's sentencing.
