Derek Jeter re-joined the New York Yankees temporarily in the Bronx on Saturday after spending much of the season rehabbing at the team's minor league complex in Tampa. The Yankee captain hopes to start running shortly as he continues his rehabilitation procedures on a broken left ankle.

Jeter was in town as part of a break between the rehab process. He also participated in batting practice with teammates and plans to be in New York until Sunday.

The Yankee shortstop is optimistic for his healing process and hopes to soon be ready to return to action. "I feel good," he said. "Everything's moving in the right direction."

When asked about how far along his shortstop is in the rehabilitation process, Yankee manager Joe Girardi responded: "It's a lot better than we were when you look back two weeks ago, four weeks ago. Curious to see him out there running around. It's nice that we get an opportunity to see him, and he's anxious to be back, so this is good."

Jeter took part in an examination in Charlotte, N.C. last week and was cleared to move toward baseball activities. He has yet to play this season after breaking his ankle during Game 1 of the ALCS against the Baltimore Orioles during last year's playoffs.

Jeter's return was slowed down after he suffered another fracture during his rehab in April.

Alex Rodriguez also made progress with his injury status after facing live pitching in simulated at-bats in Tampa. The third baseman walked twice and hit a single during the drill, according to Girardi.
