Maybe the San Francisco 49ers really don't know what to do with Colin Kaepernick in 2015.

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that new 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula backtracked a bit on the talk of using the enigmatic 49ers quarterback much more extensively in the running game than the team did in 2014.

Hostile tweet a sign that Colin Kaepernick is losing nice-guy persona he had in college?

"We want to utilize the total package that Colin has," Tomsula said, according to the publication. "That's what we want to do. Does that mean Colin Kaepernick is going to be the leading rusher every week? No. No plans on that at all. But let's use everything he has - like we have done."

For all the talk that Jim Harbaugh tried to make Kaepernick into a pocket passer, he established career highs in both passing and rushing yards in 2014. Kaepernick threw for 3,369 yards and rushed for 639, but the 49ers finished 8-8 and failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since he became the San Francisco starter.

Now, Tomsula is saying he wants to use all of Kaepernick's talents - but hinted that the 49ers already have done that in his career.

Kaepernick is spending the offseason in Phoenix, working with two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner and quarterback-coach guru Dennis Giles about helping him find more success in the pocket. Perhaps, Tomsula wants to see the changes in Kaepernick's game as a result of his offseason training before he gives any definitive answer about the changes in the 49ers offense for 2015.

Ironically, Kaepernick threw for 248 yards and led the 49ers with 64 rushing yards during week two of the 2014 season against the Chicago Bears. He came back a week later, throwing for 245 yards and rushing for 54 yards against the Arizona Cardinals.

The 49ers lost both those games.

Kaepernick also suffered 52 sacks last season, so how much are the 49ers concerned that their problems stem from Kaepernick, as opposed to the problems stemming from a patchwork offensive line?

If San Francisco doesn't improve its line - or upgrade in wide receivers, for that matter, then "using everything" Kaepernick has may not matter.
