Peyton Manning Rumors: Salary Biggest Obstacle For Return To Denver? [VIDEO]

The Denver Broncos have several issues they need to address this offseason, as they have a laundry list of important players eligible for free agency, as well as some holes to fill if they hope to challenge for a Super Bowl title again in 2015.

Julian Edelman Prayed For Miracle During Last Minute Of Super Bowl

At the top of the team's list of problems is their situation with Peyton Manning. The star quarterback suffered a quad injury down the stretch last season, which drastically limited his effectiveness, and it changed the entire offensive dynamic of the Broncos.

Following Denver's playoff loss, rumors swirled that Manning may retire. Now, he has apparently decided to return, and he is working out again to get back into shape. But new rumors have emerged that the team may not want Manning back.

Denver To Try And Force Manning Out?

The core issue for whether Manning plays for Denver in 2015 is likely his salary. According to Football by Football, Manning's cap hit will be $21.5 million next season. With how many other needs the team has, that number is simply not tenable.

The Broncos could simply fail Manning on his physical in a few weeks, which would allow them to release him without penalty. But a better move for both sides may be for Manning to take a pay cut.

Manning has earned nearly $250 million in his career, and that is without factoring in any of his endorsement deals. He does not need the money, and taking a pay cut would serve multiple purposes.

Obviously, the primary benefit would be giving the team more money to work with to re-sign some of their key players. However, the move would also set a great example, proving that the team's most important player really does want to win at all costs. It would likely provide some encouragement for other players to return to the team, and it could even entice some of them to take pay cuts as well.

If Manning and the Broncos are serious about staying together for another Super Bowl run, then having the future Hall of Famer take a pay cut is the most logical way to go about it.
