ESPN is reporting free agents Dwight Howard and Chris Paul are in constant contact, trying to figure out a way where the two might be able to join as teammates next season.
"They would love to play together if somebody can make it happen," an unidentified league one source told ESPN.
ESPN surmised their best and perhaps only option might be Atlanta, where the Hawks have the salary cap flexibility to assume two maximum-salaried contracts. But reportedly Howard, a native of the area, is not overly fond of the idea of returning there. Sources say, however, he may entertain the idea more seriously if it proves to be his only chance of the two teaming up.
Sources told ESPN yet another obstacle could be Paul’s overall fondness for Los Angeles. After leading the Clippers to the second round of the playoffs, Paul became disenchanted with management after he felt they didn't defend him from claims he was the man pulling the strings in the firing of Coach Vinny del Negro.
According to ESPN, all now seems forgiven to the point both he and Howard may have a preference for the Clippers. Because the Clippers don't have enough cap room to sign Howard as a free agent, it would take a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers to make it happen.
Speculation is the Lakers would be more than a little resistant to any such move, but could be swayed by a potential package of star forward Blake Griffin and reserve guard Eric Bledsoe.
ESPN reports Howard and Paul first began hoping to one day become teammates back during the lockout of 2011 when they entertained thoughts of signing with Dallas.
