Jason Kidd Nets Coach? Reports Out That Recently Retired Guard Is Front Runner For Brooklyn Job

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting the Brooklyn Nets plan to name Jason Kidd as their new head coach.

Less than 48-hours after meeting with team brass for the first, Nets General Manager Billy King has apparently settled on Kidd, 40, who just days ago announced his retirement from the Knicks after a 19-year, Hall of Fame bound career.

According to The Inquirer, final contract details are now being hammered out and the team is expected to make the hire official any day now. The paper added the deal is expected to be a three-year pact. No financial details were provided.

Kidd previously played seven seasons for the Nets when they were located in New Jersey. The team began playing in Brooklyn at the start of this past season.

The Nets fired P.J. Carlesimo at the end of the season after the team was bounced in the first round of the playoffs by an undermanned Chicago Bulls team. Carlesimo had replaced Avery Johnson who was canned earlier in the year.

If Kidd is hired, he would have beaten out a field that included Brian Shaw, Lionel Hollins and Larry Drew, all of whom had either interviewed with the team or expressed an interest in doing so.

Kidd’s candidacy is thought to have been aided by his close ties with team star point guard Deron Williams.
