A Santa Clara construction worker assigned to the site of the new San Francisco 49ers stadium was killed earlier today in an on-site accident.
According to CBS San Francisco, the victim was working in an elevator shaft when another worker "took the car down the shaft" and accidentally crushed him near the lowest levels of Levi Stadium. Police have yet to identify the victim, but said he was an employee for the general contracting firm of Turner-Devcon. No other injuries were reported.
Santa Clara city spokesman Dan Beerman told CBS the accident took place shortly before 7 a.m., just after the work day had commenced on the $1.3 billion dollar project. Work at the site has now been halted, as state workplace safety officials conduct their investigation.
"It's a shame because we've had 1,000 people a day working on that site for well over a year now and we've had very minimal accidents, and to have this is just devastating for everybody," Beerman said.
"Everybody's walking around here in a daze," Beerman told CBS, adding that the team is expected to move into the new facility for the 2014 season.
In a statement, team officials added "we are deeply saddened" by the news.
