Florida has indefinitely suspended starting senior guard Scottie Wilbekin for violating unspecified team rules.
The university made the announcement via Twitter late Monday without going into further details. The incidents marks the second in the last seven months Wilbekin has been suspended by Coach Billy Donovan, the first time coming at the start of last season when violation of team rules was again cited.
With the McDonald’s All-American point guard Kasey Hill heading this year’s recruiting class, Wilbekin was already expected to have a tough fight retaining his starting position and this week’s development only adds to his uncertain status.
In his first season as a starter, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged 9.1 points and 5 assists last season, when the Gators advanced to the Elite Eight for the third straight season. With Patric Young returning to anchor a strong frontcourt, the Gators are thought to again have Final Four potential.
Without Wilbekin, that task is made all the more difficult as, besides the speedy Hill, the only point on the current roster Rutgers transfer Eli Carter.
A Florida spokesman declined comment when asked for further information about the cause of Wilbekin's suspension and how it would impact his status with the program.
