Tim Tebow, the unemployed yet popular NFL passer, is still struggling in his job search around the NFL. Lately, he has been linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and despite the presence of Super Bowl winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, members of the Steelers defense defended the embattled signal caller.
Steelers linebacker Larry Foote scolded media members when asked about Tebow potentially getting signed by the team and whether he's NFL caliber. You guys are the reason he's not in the league," Foote said. "It's your fault."
Foote also said, "Why not? Tebow, just from what I see, is an awesome guy and a talent. He won some games, had some success. We know it first-hand. I think he should be somewhere at least competing for a job. I think he's earned that."
When Foote says "We know it first hand," he is referring to Pittsburgh's 2011 playoff defeat at the hands of Tebow's Broncos in overtime. That version of the Broncos, reliant on ball-control, defense, and a relentless ground and pound game, kept the contest low-scoring. In overtime, the Broncos shocked Pittsburgh by launching an 80-yard bomb to Demaryius Thomas, who caught the ball and streaked into the end zone for a game winning score. The pass came on the first play of overtime.
While Tebow would not likely be given a chance to play quarterback with the Steelers, he could potentially be utilized in other capacities. As a member of the Jets Tebow was often used as a punt protector; in that role the Jets called on him several times to orchestrate fake punts that were surprisingly effective.
Many believe he also has the size and athletic ability to change positions and be a running back, fullback, or possibly a tight end. His career 47.9 completion percentage does well enough to rule out starting quarterback as an option for now.
