Road Rage Murder: New Jersey Cop Held On $1 Million Bail After Shooting Man In Maryland

A New Jersey police officer is being held on $1 million bond after he allegedly opened fire on a defenseless Maryland man during an apparent road rage incident.

Officer Joseph Walker, 40, was taken into custody by State Police on second degree murder and manslaughter charges late Saturday in Anne Arundel County on the shoulder of a ramp from Route 3 to Interstate 97 in the Millersville area, police told The Washington Post.

Police later identified the victim as 36-year-old Joseph Harvey Jr., of nearby Baltimore County. Witnesses told police the two men encountered one another around 8:30 p.m. when both were driving on the interstate.  According to The Post, Maryland authorities say at some point both men pulled over on the shoulder of the highway. Harvey and a passenger allegedly got out and began walking toward the officer’s vehicle.

Witnesses added Walker also exited his vehicle, identified himself as a cop and fired in Harvey’s direction.  A sworn officer in the Hudson County prosecutor’s office, Walker was off-duty at the time of the incident.

“We are aware of the fatal shooting incident involving one of our detectives, who was off-duty and traveling in Maryland with his wife and children,” a spokesman for the Hudson County Office told The Post. New Jersey prosecutors have detectives on their staffs for investigative work.
