Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is making good progress, while saying Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa would be fit to play against Wigan in Saturday's English Premier League game.

Rooney has not played since the Fulham game, United's second of the season, and needed surgery after suffering a nasty cut to his thigh. Ferguson, however, is confident his return in imminent.

"Wayne's doing very well," Ferguson said. "The scar's healed well and he's training terrifically.

"The issue now is when do we decide to bring him into the game? We have to take the medical advice on that one.

"He's training very well but he's not back in football training yet. All his work is being done with the physios at this point in time."

Ferguson also confirmed the availability of his two new signing Van Persie and Kagawa. The duo had picked up injuries while on international duty with the Netherlands and Japan respectively, with Van Persie taken off at half-time and Kagawa missing his country's tie against Iraq.

Ferguson also revealed Phil Jones would be out for nearly 10 weeks, with Darren Fletcher set to make a return.

"On the injury front, everyone's fit, apart from the ones we know about - Jones and (Chris) Smalling," Ferguson said.

"Jones was a bad blow for us. He got an injury in training last weekend and he'll be out for eight to 10 weeks.

"We expect Smalling to be back training by the end of the month. There's a little bit of comfort in that sense, given our center-back situation. But with Jonny (Evans) back we're in a better position than we were a couple of weeks ago.

"Darren's in the squad tomorrow, simply because I think it will give him a boost. It's a chance to progress. At this moment in time everything's going fine for him."
