Michael Vick Wants To Be Named Starter Before Camp Opens

In Michael Vick’s world, new coach Chip Kelly would anoint him as the starter even before the two have so much as had the chance to work together.

Vick told Comcast Sportsnet he is hoping Kelly openly tabs him as the starter prior to the start of the team’s mini-cap later this summer.

“Hopefully, Chip makes a decision before training camp and we won’t have to answer that question,” Vick told Comcast of his desire. “So we can go out there as quarterbacks and just focus on this season and not answer questions about competition every day.”

With the Eagles coming off one of their most unproductive offensive seasons in years, that’s not likely to happen any time soon, as Vick and fellow signal-caller Nick Foles are expected to battle throughout camp in a duel some are deeming the team’s “most open competition at the game’s most important position in 15 years.”

Hired to replace Andy Reid in January, the final decision lies with Kelly, who has repeatedly stressed he will not be pressured or hurried into to declaring a starter and has said honest personnel decisions at any position can’t be made until the pads come out.

“We have an understanding of their athletic ability and how they run, change direction and things like that,” Kelly told Sportsnet. “But there are still a lot of things to be evaluated when you put the pads on. t's still a physical game. A lot of guys look great in shorts and T‑shirts, then they disappear when you put the pads on. Until we get the pads on, we can't tell.”

Vick later told reporters “there’s better things to talk about. “Y’all [in the media] kill me anyway, whether it’s right or wrong,” he said.
