North Carolina star wingman P.J. Hairston was arrested by Durham Police late Wednesday on possession of marijuana charges.
According to The Sporting News, Hairston was taken into custody after being stopped at a license checkpoint around 10:20 p.m. and initially cited for driving without a license.
UNC spokesman Steve Kirschner later told ABC News the school is “aware of the situation” and is “still gathering information."
The sharp-shooting Hairston averaged 14.6 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Tar Heels this past season and strongly weighed declaring for the NBA draft before ultimately announcing he planned to return to Chapel Hill returning to school.
“I value the experiences I have had over the past two years in Chapel Hill, and hope to continue to grow under Coach Roy’s (Williams) guidance," Hairston said in a statement when his return was announced. "Coach always says ‘when you focus on the team during the season, he will support us in the offseason’ — this is my way of supporting coach, my teammates and the Tar Heel community. Go Heels!”
Hairston started the season’s final 13 games, upping his scoring average to more than 18 points over that stretch. Hairston performed his late heroics despite having eight stitches placed in his left hand after tearing the webbing between two fingers during UNC’s ACC Tournament quarterfinals win over Florida State.
