The Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2013, which was John Farrell's first as manager of the team. He led the team to a title after finishing last in 2012. Unfortunately for Farrell, the team regressed in 2014 and finished last in the AL East once again.

Entering 2015, there are questions surrounding the team and Farrell's leadership that were not there just a year ago. According to CBS Sports, Farrell has not been offered a contract extension, and he will head into the coming season knowing that it is the final year that he is under contract with the team.

"Yeah, it's humbling," Farrell said Thursday. "And that's one of the beauties of sports. You have to prove yourself every year."

Strasburg Headed To Boston?

"You understand that you're always under the microscope in a position like this, even more so in a market that's very much in tune with our team," Farrell continued. "I feel like we share the responsibility when things go well, as well as when they don't go well."

The Red Sox are reportedly open to discussing an extension with Farrell, although the two sides have not engaged in any formal negotiations.

"When I look at myself, I know that every day I walk in that door, I'm giving everything I have to set out to win that night," he said. "Sometimes that doesn't always work out."

The Red Sox are expected to return to contention in 2015, as the team has a number of promising young players that they hope will become difference-makers for the squad. The team also made some big free agent acquisitions and shored up the back end of the rotation.

The team is reportedly considering trying to add a staff ace, which many consider to be the final piece of the puzzle that Boston would need to become a World Series contender.
