Yahoo! Sports is reporting the Denver Nuggets have fired Coach George Karl, the 2012-2013 NBA Coach of the Year.
According to Yahoo!, with just a year remaining on his current deal, Karl was aggressively seeking an extension and ownership was simply unwilling to make such a long-term commitment. The Nuggets won 57 games this season, earning the third-seed in Western Conference playoffs, where they were ultimately bounced by the Golden State Warriors.
None of that seemed to matter Thursday when team CEO Josh Kroenke decided to part ways with the 62-year-old coach. Sources told Yahoo! that Nuggets management now believes that given its talented, young roster, the team will have little trouble in attracting an elite coach.
Their relatively quick decision seemingly allows Karl, who boasts a career 1,131 victories and .599 overall winning percentage, to get in on all the league’ other many openings. The New Jersey Nets, Los Angeles Clippers and possibly even Memphis Grizzlies are all looking for new leaders.
As for the Nuggets, at the very least, next season shapes up as a time of front office transition. Earlier this off season, General Manager Masai Ujiri announced he was leaving for a similar post with the Toronto Raptors.
