Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is out until training camp after minor knee surgery, according to ESPN.com. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday's procedure will have no "long-term effects" on the quarterback's health.

Roethlisberger has been dealing with discomfort in the knee, and the team recommended he undergo the surgery so he is ready once camp opens next month.

Doctors operated on Roethlisberger's right meniscus, a source familiar with the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. It was a similar procedure to the one performed on his left knee seven years ago, which has been injury-free since.

The 31-year-old has been a full participant during organized team activities but has dealt with a series of health issues throughout his career. Roethlisberger missed one game and was limited in several others with a right ankle injury in 2011 and sat out three games in 2012 after fracturing a rib.

Roethlisberger is a two-time Pro Bowler and a two-time Super Bowl champion. He has led the Steelers to three total AFC championship appearances, with the only unsuccessful outcome coming during his rookie season, in which he was elected AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

He was the first quarterback to start two Conference Championship games in his first two seasons in the NFL and the youngest quarterback to ever win the Super Bowl. With his victory in 2009, Roethlisberger became the second-youngest quarterback to have multiple Super Bowl wins.

Roethlisberger also ranks as the Pittsburgh Steelers' all-time leader in passing yards with 29,844.
