When you've coached Peyton Manning for three years, it's easy to forget the names of some of the other quarterbacks in the NFL. There are 31 other starting QBs, after all.
So perhaps John Fox can be forgiven for not quite getting the name of his new quarterback right during his introductory press conference as coach of the Chicago Bears.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that two questions into Fox's news conference, he was put on the spot about whether he can win with the enigmatic Jay Cutler.
Steelers' Fan Obit says team's playoff loss and Dick LeBeau exit contributed to her death
"That's a lot for a guy who has not talked to him yet," Fox said, according to the Sun-Times. "I feel good about whoever is at quarterback. I'm looking forward to getting to know Jake [sic]. He did text me, welcoming me to Chicago, and was very excited that I was coming here, which I thought was a nice move.
Terrell Owens says he still can be a 1,200-yard receiver at age 41.
"I just reminded him that this game is only fun when we win - and we will - and that I was looking forward to getting to see him. I'm looking forward to seeing Jake face-to-face."
The Sun-Times speculated that Fox may have been thinking about the quarterback he had before the Peyton Manning days - Jake Delhomme, whom Fox coached when he was with the Carolina Panthers.
The Sun-Times was quick to point out that Fox did refer to the Bears' starter as Jay in subsequent questions. And in case anyone had any doubts that Fox knew who his quarterback is, he put them to rest right away.
"You know, it's not always about talent, whether you're putting together a SEAL Team 6 group. Sometimes it's experience; sometimes it's a special skill," Fox said when asked again about Cutler. "It's not always the most talented teams that win. It's the best teams that win."
The Bears signed Cutler to a seven-year, $126 million deal before the 2014 season with the Bears, although only $54 million is guaranteed.
And Fox refused to guarantee that Cutler would be his starter in 2015.
The best quarterback is "one that wins," Fox said.
