Jozy Altidore is coming home after a less than distinguishable career abroad.
The 25-year-old striker will join the Toronto FC roster after spending the past few seasons on Sunderland in the English Premier League. Terms have not yet been disclosed, but Toronto is expected to include a swap of another player in return for Altidore's services.
Altidore's Team USA head coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, was blasé about his striker's transfer. Klinsmann has repeatedly said publicly that his players should forego the MLS and test themselves overseas in more competitive leagues (though they often don't listen to him).
“With Jozy, I just say it would be nice if I would see him one day in the European Champions League because I think he’s a Champions League player,” Klinsmann said, per The Toronto Sun.
“Now if there is no solution in Europe for him, if the next solution for him is MLS, that’s totally cool with me. I have no problem with that ... But from a competitive standpoint, it’s normal that a coach wishes that his players go to the highest level possible.”
Is Jozy Altidore Landon Donovan's Replacement for Team USA
Altidore has had an up-and-down career as a professional soccer player. He's scored big goals for the United States national team, and scored 39 goals in three seasons for AZ, a team in the Dutch Eredivise. However, his Premier League stint was a complete failure, as Altidore scored only one goal and was a complete nonentity for Sunderland.
