Admitting that his relationship with his one-time organization has grown strained in recent times, Jets legend Joe Namath is blasting the team as “deceptive” in the way it’s treating fans.
Appearing on The “Boomer and Carton” radio show, Namath told the hosts he isn’t on speaking terms with owner Woody Johnson nor has he talked with or even been introduced to new general manager John Idzik.
“I haven’t met Mr. Idzik, unless it was 40 years ago,” he said. “But no, I have not been on good terms with Mr. Johnson for the last couple of years. You know, you’ve got to be honest,” Namath said. “I want to be honest. And I think they’ve been deceptive.”
Namath described his beef with the organization as being his belief the team has long been misleading fans about the caliber of squad it puts on the field.
“The team’s declined while we fans are being told how good they are constantly, how this new player’s so good,” he said. “They haven’t played up to how they’ve been touted. And so I think they’ve misled the fans more or less. They’ve made some bad decisions on personnel the last couple of years.”
The 69-year-old Hall of Famer also later deemed his relationship with the organization as “uncomfortable.”
“I wouldn’t say bad terms, you know,” he told the show. “Uncomfortable. Because I was saying earlier, you don’t like to hear negative things, negative vibes, and Woody, I’m sure doesn’t like the criticism. I mean, when we’ve brushed shoulders in the past it hasn’t been the same as it was originally.”
