After four right forearm surgeries, Rob Gronkowski is now slated to have back surgery that will keep him for at least part on the New England Patriots upcoming training camp.
According to NFL.com, Gronkowski will have the procedure performed sometime in mid-June and his recovery time is uncertain. Disappointed as they might be, the news didn’t exactly catch team management off guard.
Gronkowski has had back issues dating back to his college years. The news is better concerning Gronkowski’s troublesome forearm. Doctors report the arm is healing with no signs of infection resurfacing.
The Patriots are desperately hoping to have Gronkowsi on board for a full training-camp, in hopes that he and new wideout Danny Amendola can quickly develop a rapport with All-Pro quarterback Tom Brady.
It’s not as if Gronkowski and Brady haven’t meshed before. In 2011, Gronkowski, in just his second season in the NFL, set the single-season record for touchdowns by a tight-end, with 17 receiving touchdowns, and 18 overall. That season, Gronkowski also became the first tight-end in history to lead the league in receiving touchdowns.
Gronkowski signed a six-year, $54 million extension with New England last season the largest deal ever for an NFL tight end. The deal included an $8 million signing bonus.
