The St. Louis Cardinals have made a few moves this offseason, but they have largely stayed away from the biggest available names. However, rumors are swirling that they may be working on making one of the biggest moves of the offseason.

Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez Headline MLB HoF Class

According to Fox Sports, the team is looking at the possibility of adding a premier starting pitcher to their already impressive starting rotation. The Cardinals are exploring their options with regard to putting together a trade offer for either Phillies ace Cole Hamels or Detroit's David Price. The team is also considering making an offer to free agent Max Scherzer.

In each case, the cost of acquiring the player will be astronomical, as teams simply do not add dominant starters in their prime on the cheap. Scherzer could command a contract approaching $200 million, and tradign for Price or Hamels will like require St. Louis to part with one or more of the best prospects in the organization.

Red Sox Out Of Hamels Race

Based on the St. Louis' insistence that they are satisfied with their rotation and the aforementioned cost of these three players, it seems unlikely that the Cardinals will pull the trigger on any of the three.

Of the Cardinals current pitchers, staff ace Adam Wainwright is coming off surgery, Michael Wacha dealt with injuries all year, John Lackey is about to be a free agent, and the rest of the rotation is young and untested. Although they say they are confident in their pitchers, it is believed that the Cardinals would prefer to add a lefty, hence their interest in Hamels and Price. They are believed to be interested in Scherzer because he is a St. Louis native.
