Larry Sanders has had an interesting couple of years for the Milwaukee Bucks, and his career keeps getting stranger. A couple of years ago, Sanders was arguably the most promising young center in the NBA, but since then, he has dealt with personal issues that have made him a shadow of the player he used to be.
This season, Sanders left the team the day after Christmas for "personal reasons," and he was reportedly quitting basketball altogether. Amid his personal struggles, the young center suddenly returned to the team yesterday and watched the Bucks play the Suns in street clothes on the bench, according to Deadspin.
After the game, Sanders made his first public comments in weeks and spoke about dealing with unspecified issues and how they are affecting his ability to play. ''It feels great to be around the guys again,'' said Sanders. ''There is no timetable for my return. Without these things being corrected, I don't think basketball will be something I can even do,'' he said.
Sanders went on to say that the speculation that he might quit basketball permanently had no truth to it. ''But, what is true,'' he said, ''is that I'm in the process of working things out now to do as best for my psyche and my physical health going forward. There's a lot of evaluating going on. There's a lot of inside talk just to put myself in the best place for my health right now.''
Not much is known about the problems that Sanders has faced, but they have apparently been affecting him for some time. He has struggled on the court with his temper at times, and he has a penchant for drawing technical fouls. Whether that is connected to the issues he says he needs to work out is unknown.
