The San Antonio Spurs are headed to the NBA Finals once again, thanks to another outstanding game from point guard Tony Parker. Parker shouldered the scoring load for San Antonio in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals, scoring 37 points on 15-of-21 shooting to lead his team to a 93-86 win.
Parker scored his 37 points the hard way, driving to the lane and getting to the basket. He was 6-of-6 from the free throw line and took just one 3-pointer. He also racked up six assists and four rebounds, completely decimating the Grizzlies' highly touted defense.
After the victory, Parker revealed a promise he had made to power forward Tim Duncan at the end of last season. "Since last year, I promised to him (Duncan) that we will go back, go back to the Finals and get an opportunity to win the whole thing and I'm trying to do my best, try to be aggressive every night. I think everybody on the team, we really want to do it for him. We win the West and now it's one more step. This is the hardest one."
Duncan, a future Hall of Famer, said of Parker, "He's been amazing. Every year he gets better and better and better. He's been carrying us. You can see tonight he carried us the entire game."
Zach Randolph of Memphis was tamed again, scoring just 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Randolph was held to just 11 points per game in the Western Conference finals, four below his season average.
Much of Randolph's containment was thanks to Duncan, who doesn't score quite as much as he used to but can still affect games in a big way on both ends of the floor. In addition to his 15 points and eight rebounds, Duncan recorded four blocked shots.
