Despite the fact that he was fired from the New York Jets, few doubt that Rex Ryan has the ability to coach in the National Football League, and he may get another opportunity sooner than expected. Ryan is supposedly in line to interview with two teams about their vacant head coaching positions.

Black Monday Claims Three Victims

Ryan was widely regarded as one of the better coaches in the league after his first few seasons with the Jets, but the team has struggled over the past few years due in large part to not having any kind of reliable quarterback play.

Still, the team played strong defense, and they never quit playing hard, even when it looked to be a certainty that Ryan would be fired after the season. That is one of the most impressive things that points to Ryan's ability to coach, as most teams simply stop trying when they believe that their coach is getting fired.

The 49ers would seem to be a logical fit for Ryan, as they already have the pieces in place to field another dominant defense. However, they may elect to go with an offensive coach in the end due to their offensive struggles this year. Jim Harbaugh recently parted way with the Niners and joined Michigan.

The Falcons thought about hiring Ryan before eventually giving the job to Mike Smith. The cupboard is pretty bare in Atlanta thanks to their recent stars-and-scrubs roster constructions, but there is talent on offense. The defense needs work, but that is Ryan's specialty, and he may be the perfect fit for a Falcons team that hopes to return to contention next season. Ryan could be a good choice for Smith's successor.
