Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson no longer is enrolled at school because of a "Residence Life" violation, the Chicago Tribune is reporting.
The school has confirmed in multiple reports that the junior who was the starter last season for the Fighting Irish, who reached the National Championship game is not in school.
"Everett is not enrolled at the university. Federal law and our own polices preclude us from discussing specifics," spokesman Dennis Brown said in an email that ESPN.com reported. Golson, from Myrtle Beach, S.C., is still listed on the official team roster on the school's athletic website.
Golson beat out Tommy Rees for the job in August, started 11 games and threw for 2.405 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions last season. Golson completed 58.8 percent of his passes in leading the Irish to an undefeated season.
He also ran for 298 yards with six additional touchdowns.
Notre Dame played for the championship against Alabama in January, trying for its first title since 1988, but the Crimson Tide beat the Irish 42-14.
Rees still is on the team and will be a senior in the fall. He has thrown for 4.413 yards during his Notre Dame career and has 18 career starts. Rees played in 12 games in 2012 with two starts. He completed 34-of-59 passes for 436 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
WNDU-TV earlier reported that Golson no longer was enrolled at Notre Dame.
Golson's absence leaves Notre Dame with three quarterbacks heading into fall camp. Along with Rees, the Irish have junior Andrew Hendrix and true freshman Malik Zaire on their roster. Zaire was a midyear enrollee who participated in spring practice.
According to ESPN's own scouting service, the "ESPN 300," Zaire was the No. 6 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2013.
Another quarterback, Gunner Kiel, transferred to the University of Cincinnati in the spring.
