Michael Sam deserves another shot in the NFL.

That's according to Ethan Westbrooks, the undrafted defensive end who beat out Sam for the final DE spot on the St. Louis Rams' finalized 53-man roster. Sam's healthy competition with Westbrooks was a key storyline of the former's recent Oprah-produced documentary.

"We both had an opportunity to show who can help the team more and show we belong," Westbrooks said, via TMZ Sports. "I was just more of a fit for the current direction the team wanted to go in."

Westbrooks added that Sam was a "great teammate" and said that he "should be on an NFL roster."

"The NFL is hard man. I wish him the best and hope nothing but the best for him."

Taken by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft, Michael Sam made history by becoming the first openly gay active player in the NFL. After failing to make St. Louis' final roster he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys. Sam spent multiple weeks on the Cowboys practice squad, but was soon released from that position as well.
