Miguel Cotto is the WBC middleweight champion, and his team is in the middle of negotiations to take on Canelo Alvarez in 2015 in what would be one of the biggest fights of the year.

If a fight with Alvarez can't be worked out, however, boxing fans shouldn't hold their breath waiting for Cotto to face popular WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.

"My thoughts on Golovkin are that, you know Miguel; for his entire career, you don't look at risk or anything like that. He just wants to go and to fight the best. But there are a few bigger fights than a fight with Golovkin," Cotto's adviser Gaby Pengaricano said.

"Everybody knows that and you and me know that. So Miguel will be interested in taking the biggest fights first. If not all of the big fights are there, then, he will consider Golovkin. Right now, that's not the current scenario, so we're not there yet."

While Cotto does hold a major middleweight strap, he is not limited in terms of options for his next fight. Cotto is no true middleweight-when he defeated Sergio Martinez this summer there was a 159-pound catchweight, and Cotto entered the ring under it.

If negotiations with Alvarez break down, Cotto's team is reportedly interested in a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. A battle with Timothy Bradley is also in play, with Bradley saying he would go up in weight to fight Cotto.

Mayweather is the biggest draw in the sport, so he would get preference ahead of Golovkin; the surprise is that Pengaricano said Bradley may also represent a bigger payday than Golovkin.

"He could be. He's an excellent fighter. He's class A and he's absolutely at the top of the game. So I'm sure that, also, he would make a great fight. Sure, I would say that he would be a bit bigger than Golovkin, I would say."
