Former NBA All-Star forward Antoine Walker appeared on The Ricki Lake Show this week to talk about how he came to squander his $110 million NBA fortune.
Walker, who is on record in admitting he actually squandered a lot more just that, told Lake he now strives to be a positive role model and living example for young kids and other athletes of what not to do. The former three-time NBA all-star retired in 2008 and soon thereafter found himself forced to sell the 2006 NBA championship ring he won with the Miami Heat for a measly $21,500. Walker eventually filed for personal bankruptcy in 2010.
Walker added he’s now a consultant for Denovo Elite Athlete Management, a new firm that counsels athletes on how to best invest their money and protect their assets. "It's a way to give back," Walker says, "so that other guys don't make the same mistakes I made." Walker previously told Sports Illustrated he is also starting to do his “due diligence” and determining whether to pursue a degree online or return to the classroom.
Whatever approach he ultimately decides to take, it’s a long way from the days of 2011, when Walker confessed to felony charges of passing off bad checks in the amount of $750,000 to three Las Vegas casinos and was sentenced to probation. Walker told Lake he is now keeping his options open, after previously telling SI he reopens to the idea of coaching.
