Doc Rivers Rumors: Celtics Deny Brooklyn Nets Permission To Speak With Coach About Opening

The Boston Celtics have denied the Brooklyn Nets permission to speak with Coach Doc Rivers regarding their vacant coaching position.

According to ESPN, looking to make a big-name hire to go along with their new, top-of-the-line arena, the Nets sought permission to speak to Rivers, perennially thought as one of the league’s best strategists.

ESPN also reported not only did the Boston president of basketball operations strongly rebuff the Nets overtures, he indicated he expects Rivers back on the sidelines for the Celts next season.

“Doc told me he’s coming back,” Ainge told ESPN. “I talk to him almost every day about our team and what we are going to do moving forward.”

One of the bigger decisions seemingly facing the team is what to do with free-agent forward and longtime team leader Paul Pierce. Reports have previously indicated the Celts are torn between bringing back the beloved star or finally parting ways with him and rebuilding around a core of Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley, Jeff Green and Jared Sullinger.

The future of all-star forward Kevin Garnett also remains uncertain and rumors have persisted he might even be considering retirement.

ESPN added the Nets will also inquire about the availability of Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins, who now has his team in the Western Conference Finals facing San Antonio.
