Michael Sam made inspiring headlines in 2014 as the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL. He was taken by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round, but didn't make the team's final 53-man roster. He landed with the Cowboys practice squad, but was released from Dallas in October.

Since then Sam has been using his star wattage to make a difference off the field, as a continued advocate and activist for the the LGBTQ cause.

Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network followed Sam around for a number of months, chronicling his quest to become the first openly gay man to land on an NFL roster. The 90-minute documentary will air over Christmas weekend.

Sam also sat down for a one-on-one interview with Oprah, where he not only discussed both his own journey, but revealed an interesting piece of new information. According to Sam, there are multiple other (closeted) gay men in the NFL, and he said they have reached out to him at times for demonstrations of mutual support.

"Gay men in the NFL reached out to you and called you?" Oprah asks in the interview, and Sam confirms with a series of nods.
