Details are emerging about the alleged rape of a woman by former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald in which the accused NFLer texted a police officer posing as his accuser about their sexual encounter.
According to reports, McDonald, believing he was texting the victim, denied that he had forced himself on her and even said he thought they had hit it off nicely.
"S--t just happened," McDonald texted the officer. "We were just enjoying the moment ... I don't understand why you're bothered. U chose to stay with me another day."
The victim, who claims she had hit her head prior to having sex with McDonald and was unaware of what was happening, said that their sex wasn't consensual. The detective texted McDonald that he shouldn't have had sex with her after she hurt herself, but he denied any wrongdoing.
"I didn't do anything wrong," McDonald said. "I felt like we had a real connection and we actually like each other."
McDonald was cut by the 49ers when this story broke, in part because they had stood by him during another fiasco earlier this season. At the peak of the furor over Ray Rice's domestic violence incident McDonald was accused of assaulting his girlfriend and leaving her with bruises and scratches. He was eventually not charged with anything. At the time, 49ers owner Jed York defended McDonald and begged that he not be compared to Rice.
"Ray McDonald is not Ray Rice. And if there's another one it's not the same as the previous. That each case is it's own individual entity. I think as a society we have a sense of saying, 'Well, you didn't do it right with Ray Rice right away so you need to overdo it with Ray McDonald or whoever else it is," York said.
McDonald has played for the 49ers all year, accumulating 39 tackles and three sacks.
