Just about the unthinkable happened in US women's soccer on Friday, as the name was bumped from the number one overall world ranking for the first time in seven years.

Germany topped FIFA's year-end rankings, catapulting over the Americans after the Stars and Stripes' recent loss to Brazil and tie with China. The Germans, meanwhile, had won two impressive matches over Sweden and England. The US will have a rematch against Brazil this weekend, in the final of the International Tournament of Brasilia.

The next rankings won't be released until the end of March 2015, which means that the American women have ample time to regain their ground. By that time, they'll also have star forward Alex Morgan back from an ankle injury she suffered in the summer at a World Cup qualifier.

The Women's World Cup will kick off in Canada in June of next year. Like their male counterparts in 2014, the women's national team drew the group of death for the tournament, with initial matches against Australia, Sweden, and Nigeria. Germany, the US, and reigning champ Japan are all early favorites to win the Cup.

Interesting to note: The US Women's soccer team has not won a World Cup since 1999.
