With their newly earned lottery pick in hand, the Dallas Mavericks are now meticulously plotting to land 2013's biggest free agency prize.
According to ESPN, with star forward Dirk Nowitzki already on record as saying he’s willing to take a significant pay cut in order to improve the team’s roster, management is now also said to be trading its No. 13 pick in an effort to raise more cap space to pursue Dwight Howard.
A free agent, Howard is planning to entertain multiple offers this summer, ESPN reports, including expected proposals from the Houston Rockets and his hometown Atlanta Hawks.
Even though the Lakers can offer Howard more than $30 million more than any other team over the lifetime of any deal, it’s not a given that he will return to Los Angeles next season after clashing with Coach Mike D’Antoni for most of the season.
ESPN also reported that during his team exit interview, Howard told GM Mitch Kupchak not only did he feel misused for most of the year but also disrespected by D’Antoni’s habit of only turning to Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash for leadership.
Among all Howard’s potential suitors, no one is expected to be any more aggressive than the Mavs. “We’d love to get one of the main guys, Nowitzki told ESPN last week of the team’s interest in both Howard and fellow free agent Chris Paul.
“I think both are in L.A., where you want to play basketball, and both are in great positions and situations. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
