Brian Urlacher Announces NFL Retirement

Chicago Bears All-Pro linebacker Brian Urlacher has announced his retirement from football via his official Twitter account.

Urlacher, who spent all 13 of his seasons with the Bears, simply tweeted: “It was an honor to play my entire career for the Chicago Bears.”

Urlacher became a free agent at the end of the season after several weeks of intense negotiations the two sides revealed they were not able to come to an agreement and would be parting ways.  ESPN reported that the Minnesota Vikings and perhaps even the Denver Broncos were interested in meeting with Urlacher, but none of those developments ever occurred.

"After spending a lot of time this spring thinking about my NFL future, I have made a decision to retire," Urlacher said in a statement he posted on Twitter. "Although I could continue playing, I'm not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that's up to my standards. When considering this along with the fact I could retire after a 13-year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear."

After a career where he won Rookie of the Year, was selected to eight Pro Bowls and was Named NFL Defensive Player in 2005, Urlacher is thought to be a surefire Hall of Famer. His fearless style also long endeared him to his teammates.

"I want to thank all of the people in my life that have helped me along the way," Urlacher tweeted. "I will miss my teammates, my coaches, and the great Bears fans. I'm proud to say that I gave all of you everything I had every time I took the field. I will miss this great game, but I leave it with no regret."
