San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller remains hungry to improve the team's roster even though he's already traded for outfielder Matt Kemp. According to several sources, the Padres and Tampa Bay Rays are discussing a major swap that would land outfielder Wil Myers in San Diego.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal first reported that Myers to San Diego talks were underway.
Sources: Significant optimism that Wil Myers to San Diego gets done. Said to be very close. @Ken_Rosenthal first mentioned the trade talks.

Jeff Passan then followed that up by mentioning Myers might not be in San Diego very long, a la pitcher Andrew Heaney who was a Dodger for mere hours before getting shipped to the Angels.
Could be a similar situation to what happened with Andrew Heaney: traded to one team, onto another. GMs these days always five steps ahead. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 17, 2014
At the moment it's unclear what the Padres would send to Tampa Bay for Myers, the 2013 American League Rookie of the Year, but top catching prospect Austin Hedges' name has come up along with several of San Diego's young arms.
According to reports, the reason Myers is on the block so soon is that Rays brass is unhappy with his consistency, and admittedly spotty work ethic in 2014.
"Last year I came into spring training wanting to prove to everybody, wanting to prove to a new team what I can do," Myers said in September. "And this year I kind of came into spring training thinking I had already arrived and didn't really work as hard as I should have, like I did the year before."
Myers slashed just .222/.294/.320 last season, down from .293/.354/.478 in his rookie season.
Talks of a third team being involved have surfaced, with that third team being the Seattle Mariners. They have been rumored to be in on several bats this offseason such as Nelson Cruz (signed), Melky Cabrera (White Sox), and Dayan Viciedo (unsigned). The name brought up with regards to a Myers trade is Taijuan Walker, who went 2-3 with a 2.61 ERA in five starts last year.
