Tony Romo Injury: Cowboys QB Has Back Surgery, Ready For Training Camp

Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Tony Romo will be out at least three weeks after undergoing a minor procedure to remove a cyst from his back.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Romo, who recently signed a six-year $108 million extension, will be held out of all organized team activities over the next several weeks but is expected to be back by the start of team mini-camp next month.

“If this was the regular season and I had to play next week, I could,’’ Romo told The News. “This is just about being smart. That’s why I did it now. This will have no effect on training camp.”

Before Monday, Romo had not spoken publicly since inking the deal that made him the highest paid player in franchise history on March 29th. But team owner Jerry Jones had, often raving about the increased involvement he now expects to have his quarterback take in shaping the team’s offense.

Jones recently told The News Cowboys he expects a presence “beyond the norm’’ and is looking for, “Peyton Manning-type time on the job’’ from Romo, who is guaranteed at least $40 million from the deal.

As for the cyst, Romo told News reporters: “It was something I felt like was nagging me just enough. I wanted to make sure to get it done now. I wanted to take care of it earlier rather than later.’’
