Floyd Mayweather Jr. has broken his silence about a potential super fight with Manny Pacquiao and called out his Filipino rival last Friday on Showtime.
"We are ready. Let's make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let's do it," Mayweather said to Showtime's Steve Farhood. He went on to place the blame for the lack of a super fight over the past several years on Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum.
"I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao. We tried to make the fight happen years ago; we had problems with random blood and urine testing," Mayweather said.
"I just want to be on an even playing field. Now he's in a very, very tight situation. He's lost to [Juan Manuel] Marquez [in 2012], he's lost to [Timothy] Bradley [by controversial decision in 2012 but avenged it in April]. Pay-per-view numbers are extremely low. He's desperate. I wanted that fight a long time ago. I'm just waiting on them."
Pacquiao has been calling for the fight, and responded to Mayweather's barbs with stinging critiques of his fighting style.
"You all know his fighting style. Most of his previous fights, if not all, induced us to sleep," Pacquiao said. "I will try my best to (make) this a thrilling and entertaining fight. But I doubt if he's gonna engage me in a slugfest."
Pacquiao also believes Mayweather is now calling for the super fight to happen because of a lack of options.
He (Mayweather) has reached a dead end. He has nowhere to run but to fight me," Pacquiao said.
If the fight happens, Pacquiao said he plans on defeating Mayweather the same way he beat Chris Algieri on November 22-by overwhelming the defensive-minded fighter with activity and accuracy.
"I know what I have to do. I will chase him wherever he goes just in case he decides to run around the ring. We will devise a good fight plan against him."
