Today may be a day unmatched in the history of professional tennis.
Thehindu.com reported that a pair of former No. 1 players in the world, current No. 2 Roger Federer and retired Pete Sampras took part in a light practice Sunday in Dehli and could play doubles together in the International Premier Tennis League.
Sampras and Federer were on the same plane to Dehli, and Federer tweeted a photo of the two together.
Federer, who played in mixed doubles, doubles and singles for the Indian Aces on Sunday - winning in all three matches - said he was hopeful of pairing up with the man whose Grand Slam record he broke.
Roger Federer was uncomfortable being one game away from beating Andy Murray 6-0, 6-0
"I would love to," said Federer promptly. "He is still, and will always be, one of my idols. So just speaking to him on the plane, seeing him play out on the court, teaming up with him will clearly be very special. So maybe we can make it happen a bit, tomorrow."
Indian Aces coach Fabrice Santoro sounded a bit more convincing that the pairing of Federer, owner of 17 Grand Slam championship titles, and Sampras, owner of 14 Grand Slams - including 14 Wimbledon titles between them - would play together today.
"I promise Delhi fans Roger and Pete will play men's doubles together!" That's Fabrice Santoro, Indian Aces player-cum-coach, speaking exclusively to indiatoday.com.
The opportunity to play with Sampras would be the icing of a delicious cake for Federer playing in India.
Talking of his experience of playing in India, Federer said, according to thehindu.com: "It's a big deal for me. I thought I got a great ovation. People were genuinely happy to see me.
"I was really excited to see the lights flashing. It was a goose-bumps (inducing) atmosphere...definitely a very cool moment in my career."
