The New York Yankees are deep in trade talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and they appear to be on the verge of landing the man that may replace Derek Jeter. The Bronx Bombers have their eyes on prized young shortstop Didi Gregorius, and they are trying to swing a three-team trade that would land him in New York.

According to media reports, the Yankees are in talks with the Diamondbacks and Tigers about acquiring the young shortstop. The Diamondbacks would send Gregorius to the Yankees, the Tigers would get starting pitcher Shane Greene from the Yankees, and Arizona would get two pitchers from the Tigers.

Nothing is official yet, but a source close to the deal indicated that all three sides are reportedly close to finalizing the trade. The news comes shortly after Yankees general manager Brian Cashman commented about the problems the team faced in replacing Jeter. "That's been difficult," he said. "It is not easy, shortstop. It is not a plentiful market. It is very thin. We are not the only club looking for a shortstop, so it makes it even more difficult."

If the deal gets finalized, Gregorius and Brendan Ryan would be the shortstops on the Yankees roster. Last year, the 24-year-old Gregorius played in 80 games for Arizona and batted .226 with six home runs and 27 RBIs.

Gregorius hails from the Netherlands, and he has a reputation around the majors as a good defender. He figures to be a major defensive upgrade over Jeter right away, although there are many questions about his hitting ability. In 191 career games, Gregorius carries just a .243 average, which is far below the level of offensive production the Yankees enjoyed during the Derek Jeter era.
