The Tampa Bay Rays placed reigning AL Cy Young Award winner David Price on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, according to ESPN. Price left Wednesday night's start against the Boston Red Sox in the third inning with the injury.

Price told ESPN, "It wasn't like excruciating pain, but I've never felt anything like that before. My gut feeling, I feel OK right now. I don't think it's too bad." Price left with one out in the third after giving up an RBI single to David Ortiz. The lefty walked toward the plate after delivering the pitch to the Boston slugger and appeared to grimace.

A 20-game winner last year, Price has struggled this season. The Rays have lost seven of his nine starts, and Price has uncharacteristically blown eight leads over his past seven outings.

He is 1-4 with a 5.29 ERA in nine starts. The Rays' ace has been bothered by allergies since before the start of spring training, but Price said this week he'd never use that as an excuse for his performance.

Price is a three-time MLB All-star and owns a 62-35 career record with a 3.29 ERA and 774 strikeouts since being drafted first overall in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by Tampa Bay out of Vanderbilt University.

Amongst his 2012 Cy Young Award, the decorated pitcher also has many other professional and collegiate pitching honors, including a 2010 Warren Spahn Award winner.

During his final collegiate season, Price won multiple honors including the 2007 Roger Clemens Award and the Golden Spikes Award. He was also voted the 2007 Baseball America College All-America First Team and the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year. Price also won the 2007 SEC Pitcher of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year honors during his Junior season.
