Tonight at 11:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2 the No. 25 Utah Utes (5-1) will try to remain inside the Top 25 when they take on the No. 8 Wichita State Shockers (4-0) in Salt Lake City. The Utes dropped a game to San Diego State in the early goings and got knocked from the Top 25 before re-entering the list with four straight blowout wins. No. 8 Wichita State will be a tough team to topple, but they believe their early loss taught them a few things.
"We have learned little lessons along the way this season and it's imperative that we're focused and ready to give (opponents) our best shot," coach Larry Krystkowiak said.
This will be an offense vs. defense affair; the Utes enter play scoring 82.5 points per game while the Shockers allow just 55. The Shockers are also scoring just more than 80 points a night as well, and have extended their regular season winning streak to 35 games dating back to last season.
They have kept the good times rolling despite losing last year's leader, Cleanthony Early, to the NBA Draft. In his place, junior guard Ron Baker has shouldered the scoring load, putting up 18.5 points per game.
Fellow junior Fred VanVleet is second in scoring at 13.5 points per game, while also leading the team with five assists. His 3-point shooting has been off the mark, but VanVleet believes it will come along. "It's a work in progress, but the rest of my game is doing just fine."
