Dallas Mavs star forward Dirk Nowitzki has set his hopes and sights on the team nabbing either Chris Paul or Dwight Howard this off season.
Both All-Stars are free agents, and according to the Dallas Morning News, Nowitzki is hoping their arrival could signal a revival for the suddenly struggling Mavericks. For the first time in 13 seasons, Dallas missed the playoffs just two years after winning the NBA title.
Over the years, high-rolling Mavs owner Mark Cuban has shown a propensity for doing whatever’s needed to keep his team competitive.
“We’d love to get one of those two,” Nowitzki told The News of Howard or Paul. “We’d love to get a player in here who can create his own shot and be a superstar-type player. It’s a long way to go until July. Those guys need to clear their minds a little bit and get away and then start thinking what they what they want to do with their future.
Nowitzki’s mind already seems made up. After 11 All-Star seasons, the only thing that matters to him now is winning. And, with all the salary cap space available to them, the Mavs have the resources to make it happen.
“I’ll definitely be involved,” he said of the team’s proposed sale’s pitch. “I’ll be in the draft ‘war room’ for the first time. If it helps us to be better, I’m going to take a pay cut.
Nowitzki is slated to make over $22 million this season on a deal that runs through the end of the 2014-15 season.
